Meraki is a cutting-edge hair salon which recently opened in the very-up-and-coming Margate, Kent, UK, who commissioned me to shoot two female beauty models for their entries into the annual L’Oréal Colour Trophy competition.
The brief was pretty thin; two models, one with blond hair, one with dark hair, and that we’d need to shoot them one evening at the Margate salon within the next few weeks.
The L’Oréal Colour Trophy is all about showing the hair, the way it’s been coloured, and Hayley and Harley at Meraki are at the top of their game and I knew they would create something unique, so I really needed to come up with a beautiful lighting scheme and produce an amazing set of images.
As part of the pre-production, we discussed the idea of working with high contrast images, dark hair on a light background, blond hair on a dark background, but, based on one reference I had in a shared Pinterest board, Hayley wanted to try a muted blue background to complement the hair colouring, which is what we ended up going with and works beautifully with both models.
Below are the two final images entered into the competition.
